SARA FLETCHER, the illustrator of Blue Lake Days (Trafford Publishing,
2006), was raised in New York, near Lake Erie.  She and her one sister loved
their many pets—a total of two dogs and five cats.  Her favorite toys
happened to be two teddy bears she shared with her sister; they were named
George and Jellybean (Jelly for short).  She loved the books written by
Arnold Lobel about Frog and Toad and Russell Hoban’s stories about Frances
the badger.  Her favorite color was lavender.

Raised in a rural area, Fletcher
loved the colors of the  outdoors.
When she
was three, she tried to
capture the trees in her family’s
backyard.  The
picture had a
willow, an apple and a maple with
a grassy ground and sky.
She
labored over it and loved the
satisfaction of making the apples
red
against the different greens.

Fletcher went on to receive her
BFA in ceramic sculpture from
Alfred
University, a post-
baccalaureate certificate in
painting from Brandeis
University,
and her MFA in painting from
the University of Iowa. She has
exhibited work in
Massachusetts, the states of
New York and Iowa.

"Sarah Shey takes just a few
 words to capture the
essence of Iowa's unique
places like Lake Okoboji.
Both children and adults will
find the work of
Shey to be a place where
their own Iowa experiences
 are captured."
CARLA OFFENBURGER,

"A whimsical and color-filled
fantasy ride!"
—CASEY DUNAGAN,

With school buses parked and spelling quizzes done, it was time for a blue lake vacation under the sun. I frolicked in thick water until I was sandy.
